CTPL Insurance

All road vehicles need CTPL

Every vehicle on the road - whether private cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, used cars, military trucks, heavy-duty vehicles, electric or hybrid cars - are all required to purchase CTPL.

All registered drivers need CTPL

Every car owner or car lessee, who drives within the boundaries of Thailand must purchase CTPL - regardless of where that car was purchased. If you get into an accident and need to make a claim to get your expenses reimbursed, call the Road Accident Victims Protection Company (just ring them at 1620). Make sure you do this within 180 days of the accident date, and prepare all of the following documents: ID card Driver's license, Copy of car registration, A copy of the registered address for both the victim, and the driver at fault (or an ID card copy of the heirs in case of death), Your CTPL certificate, Police report of the incident, Receipt of the victim’s medical expenses, The victim’s medical certificate. If the injured party is still confined to a hospital, the hospital can act on behalf of the victim.

CTPL only covers third party medical expenses

CTPL covers third party medical expenses or loss of life from car accidents. If the victim is injured, the policy will pay out a minimum of THB 30,000, to a maximum of THB 80,000 after evidence proofed. If the victim loses their life, the policy will pay out THB 35,000 or THB 300,000 after evidence proofed as CTPL coverage table as below.

You should also get voluntary insurance cover

The biggest risk is that if medical expenses go beyond the CTPL budget, you will be held liable for paying the surplus. Fortunately, if you have voluntary car insurance, your insurer will pay on your behalf, up to the sum specified by your policy - and you won’t have to pay. Without voluntary insurance, the driver who caused the accident has to pay for the rest. Medical expenses can balloon up, so we highly recommend that you hedge against this risk by purchasing a voluntary plan.

How much does CTPL cost?

The price you pay depends on your car type, and how many seats there are in your car. There are 9 different car types, and the lowest tier starts at THB 645.21 annually. Check out our table of premiums to find out more.
